How to Repair a Damaged QuickBooks Company File After a Crash

When QuickBooks closes unexpectedly—whether due to a power outage, a Windows crash, or a network hiccup while hosting a company file—the company file (.QBW) can be left in a damaged state. Check for Physical File Damage
Before running any built-in QuickBooks utilities, ensure the file is actually accessible at the operating system level. Try copying your .QBW file to a new folder on your local Desktop.
If Windows gives you a "cyclic redundancy check" error or freezes during the copy, your hard drive has bad sectors. Running the Windows chkdsk utility can sometimes lock out those bad sectors and allow the file to copy. Restore from a Working Backup

QuickBooks will scan the database for structural errors. If the verification process finds problems, it will prompt you to run the Rebuild Data utility. Rebuild attempts to repair the database structure by forcing QuickBooks to unpack and repack the data tables. You may need to run the Verify and Rebuild cycle two or three times to clear all errors.
When to Seek Professional Repair
The Rebuild utility can only fix minor structural inconsistencies. If QuickBooks completely locks up during Rebuild, or if Verify returns a "Data Damage" or "Target Line" error that Rebuild cannot clear, the database structure is deeply compromised. Continuing to force the file open can cause further data loss.
