How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6000 77 When Opening a Company File

Last reviewed 2026-07-17

When you try to open your QuickBooks company file and encounter Error 6000 77, it usually means QuickBooks cannot access the file path or the file itself has sustained damage. This error is most common when opening a file stored on a network drive, an external storage device, or a server. Here is how we recommend troubleshooting and resolving the issue.

Understand What Triggers Error 6000 77

QuickBooks throws this error when it loses the connection to the file location or lacks the proper Windows permissions to read the file. Common causes include:

  • Opening a .QBW file directly from a mapped network drive or USB stick without proper synchronization
  • Damaged or corrupted company file data
  • Incorrect Windows user permissions for the folder containing the file
  • Antivirus or firewall software blocking QuickBooks from reading the file

Move the File to a Local Drive

If your company file is stored on a network server, NAS device, or flash drive, copy it to your local desktop.

  1. Create a new folder on your C:\ drive (for example, C:\QBData).
  2. Copy the .QBW file and paste it into this new local folder.
  3. Open QuickBooks while holding down the Ctrl key to bypass the automatic open sequence, then navigate to the local folder to open the file.

If the file opens successfully on the local drive, the issue stems from your network configuration or folder permissions.

Check Windows Folder Permissions

QuickBooks requires full read and write access to the folder where your company file lives.

  1. Right-click the folder containing your .QBW file and select Properties.
  2. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
  3. Select your Windows user account (or the "Everyone" group if you are setting up a network share).
  4. Ensure the box for Full Control is checked under the "Allow" column.
  5. Click Apply, then OK.

Disable Antivirus Temporarily

Sometimes, security software mistakenly flags QuickBooks network communication as a threat and severs the connection. Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall software, attempt to open the file, and re-enable the software immediately afterward. If the file opens, you will need to add an exception for QuickBooks in your antivirus settings.

Rename .ND and .TLG Configuration Files

QuickBooks uses Network Data (.ND) and Transaction Log (.TLG) files to communicate with the server. If these files become corrupted, QuickBooks cannot locate your company file.

  1. Navigate to the folder containing your QuickBooks files.
  2. Locate the files ending in .ND and .TLG (they will share the same name as your company file).
  3. Right-click each file and select Rename.
  4. Add the word .OLD to the end of the file name (e.g., CompanyFile.QBW.ND.OLD).
  5. Open QuickBooks again. The program will automatically rebuild these configuration files.

Run Verify and Rebuild Data

If you have ruled out network and permission issues, the .QBW file itself may be corrupted. Open QuickBooks, go to the File menu, select Utilities, and click Verify Data. If QuickBooks detects problems, run the Rebuild Data tool to repair structural damage to the file.

If the file fails to open entirely or the Rebuild utility stalls, the corruption is too severe for the built-in tools to handle. In these cases, running the file through a dedicated QuickBooks data recovery service can extract the intact data and rebuild a clean, working company file.
