Fixing QuickBooks Error 15102 During Payroll or Update Failures

Last reviewed 2026-07-17

When QuickBooks cannot apply a payroll update or download necessary maintenance patches, the process often halts with Error 15102. This typically points to a breakdown in communication between QuickBooks and the download server, or a misconfiguration in your system's download settings. Fortunately, this issue can usually be resolved by adjusting how QuickBooks runs and where it saves temporary update files.

Understanding What Triggers Error 15102

The error generally surfaces when QuickBooks is set to "No Connection" or when the download path for updates is invalid. It can also happen if the QuickBooks Download Manager is blocked from running properly. In shared network environments, the error frequently occurs on workstations that are trying to apply a server-side update without the correct shared directory permissions.

Run QuickBooks as a System Administrator

Update processes require elevated Windows permissions to write new files to your hard drive.

  1. Close QuickBooks completely.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks desktop icon.
  3. Select Run as Administrator.
  4. Attempt to download the payroll update again from the Employees menu.

Check Your Update Download Location

If QuickBooks is looking for update files in a folder that no longer exists or lacks proper permissions, Error 15102 will trigger.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to Help and select Internet Connection Setup.
  2. Choose the option for your computer to use its own internet connection settings.
  3. Click Next, then Done.
  4. Navigate to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Go to the Options tab.
  6. Look at the Download Location field. If it is blank or pointing to an invalid folder, either clear the field entirely to let QuickBooks use the default path, or enter a valid local folder (such as C:\Downloads).
  7. Save your changes and run the update again.

Verify Your Payroll Subscription and Billing Status

QuickBooks will fail to download updates if your payroll service is inactive due to a lapsed subscription or an expired credit card on file.

  1. Go to Employees and select My Payroll Service.
  2. Click on Account/Billing Information.
  3. Sign in to your Intuit account to verify that your subscription is active and your billing information is current.

Adjust Internet Explorer Security Settings

QuickBooks relies on your Windows internet settings to connect securely to update servers. If the security settings are too strict, the connection will be blocked.

  1. Open the Windows Start menu and search for Internet Options.
  2. Go to the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, and click Sites.
  3. Uncheck the box that requires server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
  4. Add https://*.intuit.com to the trusted websites list.
  5. Click Close, then OK, and restart QuickBooks to try the update again.

If the update continues to fail after checking these settings, the underlying QuickBooks installation or your company file's payroll data may have sustained damage. Running the QuickBooks Verify and Rebuild utilities can help identify and repair structural data issues preventing the update from applying successfully.
