Fix QuickBooks Error 6190: Mismatched Company File Issues

Last reviewed 2026-07-17

When QuickBooks Error 6190 pops up, it usually means the software is trying to open a company file in multi-user mode but something is blocking that connection. The error code typically appears with a message stating that QuickBooks is unable to open the company file, preventing you from accessing your financial data. We most often see this happen when the transaction log file (.TLG) no longer matches the main company file (.QBW), or when network and multi-user hosting settings are misconfigured.

What Triggers Error 6190

Understanding the root cause helps you apply the right fix. The most common culprits include:

  • Mismatched files: The company file (.QBW) and its corresponding transaction log file (.TLG) are out of sync, often caused by an improper shutdown or a crashed network sync.
  • Hosting configuration: Multiple computers on the same network are set to "Host Multi-User Access" instead of just the server.
  • Damaged network data file: The QuickBooks Network Data (.ND) file is corrupted, preventing the database server manager from locating the company file.
  • Incomplete updates: A QuickBooks update was interrupted or partially installed.

Rename the .TLG and .ND Files

Because mismatched or corrupted configuration files are the most frequent cause, renaming them is usually the best first step. QuickBooks will automatically recreate these files the next time you open the company file. Do not delete the .QBW file itself.

  1. Locate the folder where your QuickBooks company file is stored.
  2. Ensure you can see file extensions in your Windows folder view.
  3. Find the file ending in .TLG (it will have the same name as your company file). Right-click it and select Rename.
  4. Add the word OLD to the end of the filename (for example, companyfile.qbw.tlg.OLD).
  5. Repeat this process for the file ending in .ND (for example, rename it to companyfile.qbw.nd.OLD).
  6. Open QuickBooks and try to log in to your company file.

Verify Your Hosting Settings

For multi-user mode to function properly, hosting must be turned on only on the server computer—the machine physically storing the company file. On all other workstations, hosting must be turned off.

  1. Open QuickBooks on the server computer.
  2. Go to the File menu, hover over Utilities, and look for Host Multi-User Access.
  3. If you see Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, hosting is already on—leave it as is.
  4. Check every other computer on the network. Open QuickBooks, go to File > Utilities, and select Stop Hosting Multi-User Access if the option is available.

Run the QuickBooks File Doctor

If manual steps don't resolve the issue, the built-in QuickBooks Tool Hub can automate the repair process. The QuickBooks File Doctor tool scans your network and company file to fix common data damage and network problems.

  1. Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit's website.
  2. Open the Tool Hub and select Company File Issues.
  3. Click Run QuickBooks File Doctor.
  4. Select your company file from the drop-down menu and click Check your file.
  5. Enter your QuickBooks admin password when prompted and let the diagnostic tool run.

Update QuickBooks to the Latest Release

An outdated QuickBooks version can cause communication errors across a network. Ensure every computer on the network is running the exact same version and release of QuickBooks.

  1. Open QuickBooks and go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Go to the Update Now tab, select Reset Update, and click Get Updates.
  4. Restart QuickBooks when prompted to install the update.

Restore a Backup

If the company file itself is severely damaged and the steps above fail, your safest route is to restore a recent backup. Open QuickBooks, go to File > Open or Restore Company, and select Restore a backup copy. Follow the prompts to restore your .QBB file to a local drive before moving it back to the server.
