Quickbooks File Repair — Quickbooks Error Codes (-6177, 0)
QuickBooks error -6177, 0 means QuickBooks has the path to your company file but cannot use it to open the file -- usually because the file is hosted incorrectly or QuickBooks cannot establish the database connection to it. It belongs to the -6xxx file-access family and most often traces to hosting and location problems rather than damage inside the data, which makes it recoverable in the majority of cases.
What -6177, 0 means
To open a company file in multi-user mode, QuickBooks needs a valid path and a working database connection through the QuickBooks Database Server Manager. -6177, 0 is raised when QuickBooks has the path on record but cannot complete the connection -- the hosting service is not reaching the file, or the file sits somewhere QuickBooks cannot serve it from. The data inside is frequently intact; the breakdown is in how the file is being accessed.
Common causes
- The Database Server Manager not running on the machine that stores the file.
- A stale or damaged
.NDfile pointing QuickBooks at an outdated path. - The company file stored on a mapped or network drive QuickBooks cannot host across.
- Hosting enabled on a workstation instead of, or in addition to, the server.
What you can safely try first
- Move the company file to a local folder on the hosting machine, then open it directly there.
- Rename the
.NDfile (append.old) and reopen so QuickBooks rebuilds it. - Use the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the server to scan the folder and re-establish hosting.
- Confirm hosting is turned on only on the server machine, not on the workstations.
When professional recovery is the safer path
If the file refuses to open even on a local drive with hosting correctly set, or the -6177 error persists after a clean File Doctor and .ND rebuild, the company file itself may be damaged. Pushing further attempts risks compounding the problem. Our engineers read the .QBW directly, repair the structures keeping it from opening, and return a verified working copy -- all done in-house in North America.
