Quickbooks File Repair — Quickbooks Error Codes (-6000, -305)

QuickBooks error -6000, -305 is another member of the -6000 "cannot open the company file" family, and the -305 suffix typically signals that QuickBooks could not read the file properly because of damage or a broken connection to it. It can stem from the file's surroundings -- network, hosting, supporting files -- or from the company file itself, and in most cases it is recoverable.

What -6000, -305 means

QuickBooks reports -6000 whenever it cannot open the .QBW, and the suffix narrows the reason. -305 generally indicates a read failure: QuickBooks reached the file but could not pull the data it needed, whether because the connection dropped, a supporting file is stale, or the file's internal structures are damaged. Sorting out which of those is in play is the first step toward a clean fix.

Common causes

  • A damaged or out-of-date .ND network-data file.
  • Hosting trouble -- the Database Server Manager stopped, or the file hosted from more than one machine.
  • Network interruptions dropping the read mid-operation.
  • Internal damage to the .QBW after a crash or power loss.

What you can safely try first

  • Make sure only the server machine hosts the file and that the QuickBooks Database Server Manager is running.
  • Rename the .ND and .TLG files (add .old) and reopen so QuickBooks rebuilds them.
  • Copy the file to a local drive and open it there to test whether the network is the cause.
  • Run the QuickBooks File Doctor against the folder, and restore a clean .QBB backup if you have one.

When professional recovery is the safer path

If the hosting and supporting-file fixes do not clear -6000, -305 and a copy of the file fails to open locally, the damage is inside the .QBW. At that point repeated open attempts and rebuilds risk turning a recoverable file into a lost one. Our engineers open the file directly, repair the structures blocking access, and return a verified working copy -- all done in-house in North America, backed by a no-data, no-charge guarantee.
