Quickbooks File Repair — Quickbooks Error Codes (-6000, -30)

QuickBooks error -6000, -30 appears when QuickBooks cannot open your company file because it has lost access to the file or one of its supporting files. The -6000 series is QuickBooks' general "cannot open the company file" family, and the -30 suffix points at a problem reaching the file or its hosting service. It is usually recoverable once the access or supporting-file issue is cleared.

What -6000, -30 means

A working QuickBooks company file relies on more than the .QBW alone. The network-data file (.ND) and the transaction-log file (.TLG) sit alongside it, and the QuickBooks Database Server Manager hosts the file for multi-user access. When QuickBooks cannot reach the file or one of these companions, it stops with a -6000 error and a suffix that narrows the cause -- here, a hosting or access failure rather than internal data damage.

Common causes

  • A damaged or stale .ND file pointing QuickBooks at the wrong location.
  • The hosting service stopped on the server, or hosting configured on the wrong machine.
  • Permissions or firewall rules blocking access to the folder that holds the file.
  • The file stored on a drive or share that is no longer reachable.

What you can safely try first

  • Confirm the file is hosted on only one computer and that the QuickBooks Database Server Manager is running there.
  • Rename the .ND and .TLG files (add .old) and reopen the company file so QuickBooks rebuilds them.
  • Run the QuickBooks File Doctor against the folder containing the .QBW.
  • Copy the company file to a local drive and try opening it there to rule out a network-share problem.

When professional recovery is the safer path

If the file still will not open after the .ND rebuild and hosting checks, the trouble may be inside the .QBW itself rather than its surroundings -- and forcing repeated open attempts can worsen real damage. Our engineers read the file directly, repair the structures keeping it from opening, and return a verified working copy.
