Quickbooks File Repair — Fixing possibly damaged data files
Fixing possibly damaged QuickBooks data files starts with the built-in Verify and Rebuild utilities, which detect and repair many kinds of data corruption in your company file. Verify is the primary tool for finding damage; Rebuild attempts to correct what Verify reports.
What Verify does
The Verify Data utility examines each transaction in your company file and writes a message to the QBWin.log file for any damaged transaction it finds. Verify also detects damaged list items -- not just transactions -- giving you a record of where the trouble lies.
How to run Verify and Rebuild
- Go to File > Utilities > Verify Data and let it scan the company file.
- Review
QBWin.logfor any damaged transactions or list items it reports. - Run File > Utilities > Rebuild Data, which prompts you to create a backup first, then attempts repairs.
- Re-run Verify afterward to see whether the reported damage cleared.
What Verify and Rebuild can't catch
An important limitation: while Verify detects many types of data damage, it does not detect all of the damage that might be present in your file. A file can pass Verify and still hold deeper structural problems, and Rebuild only addresses the issues it can recognize and safely correct.
Symptoms that point past the built-in tools
- Rebuild runs but Verify keeps reporting the same damage.
- The file crashes, won't open, or throws read errors the tools can't resolve.
- Balances, reports, or lists behave inconsistently despite a clean Verify.
When professional recovery is the safer path
When Verify and Rebuild cannot clear the damage -- or when the file is too compromised to run them at all -- the repair has to happen at the database level, beneath what the utilities reach. Repeated rebuild attempts on a badly damaged file can sometimes worsen the situation.
Our engineers work directly inside the company-file database to repair corruption the built-in tools miss, recovering transactions and list items and returning a file that verifies cleanly.
For damage the standard utilities can't fix, our QuickBooks data recovery team can help. You can start a recovery with no obligation -- no data recovered, no charge, and every file handled in-house in North America.
