Quickbooks File Repair — Errors H202

QuickBooks error H202 appears in multi-user mode when QuickBooks on one computer cannot reach the server hosting the company file on another computer. The message reports that this copy of QuickBooks can't reach the server, so it cannot switch the file into multi-user access.

What H202 means

In a multi-user setup, one machine hosts the company file and others connect to it over the network. H202 means the connecting computer cannot establish communication with the host -- QuickBooks can't reach the server on that computer, so multi-user mode fails.

Common causes

  • The .ND (Network Data) file is damaged or incorrect.
  • Hosting configuration settings are wrong on the host or workstation.
  • A firewall is blocking incoming or outgoing communication to the company file.
  • QuickBooks cannot obtain the IP address of the system or server hosting the file.

What you can safely try first

  • Run Intuit's Network Diagnostic Tool, which checks whether your computer and network connection can reach the host.
  • Delete and recreate the .ND file -- the QuickBooks Database Server Manager rebuilds it when the company-file folder is rescanned.
  • Confirm hosting is enabled on the host machine only, not on the workstations.
  • Add firewall exceptions for the QuickBooks programs and ports so communication to the company file is allowed.

When professional recovery is the safer path

H202 is most often a network, hosting, or firewall issue rather than file corruption, and the steps above resolve the majority of cases. The picture changes when the company file itself opens with errors in single-user mode, or when a damaged .QBW is what's actually blocking multi-user access.

If you've confirmed the network, hosting, and firewall are correct but QuickBooks still won't open the file -- or the file shows data damage once you reach it -- our engineers can repair the company file directly and return a working copy.

When the underlying file is damaged rather than the network, our QuickBooks data recovery team can help. You can start a recovery with no risk -- no data recovered, no charge, and all work handled in-house in North America.
