Quickbooks File Repair — Error code: C=9

QuickBooks error code C=9 means the program was unable to read from an auxiliary file at the operating-system level. Where its sibling C=10 is a write failure, C=9 is the read side -- QuickBooks asked Windows to read a supporting file and the read did not succeed. This frequently points to a problem with the disk or drive holding the file rather than the company file's internal logic.

What C=9 means

A C= code is QuickBooks signaling an internal operation failure. For C=9, the failure is at the file-system level on read: the data could not be pulled off the disk as expected. A damaged disk, a bad sector, or a flaky connection to a network or removable drive are all common reasons a read like this fails.

Symptoms you'll typically see

  • C=9 appears while QuickBooks reads a data or auxiliary file.
  • The operation stops or the file fails to load.
  • Other applications may also report read errors on the same drive.
  • The problem may follow a specific drive rather than the file.

Common causes

  • A damaged disk or failing sectors where the file is stored.
  • An unstable network path or a disconnected mapped drive.
  • Read-permission problems at the OS level.
  • A removable drive that is failing or improperly disconnected.

What you can safely try first

  • Copy the data file to another disk or drive and open it from there.
  • If it is on a network or removable drive, move it to a healthy local drive first.
  • Run a disk check on the original drive, since damaged media is a strong suspect.
  • Always work from a copy so the original is preserved.

When professional recovery is the safer path

If the disk is failing and the company file (.QBW) cannot be fully read, or the copy you pull off is damaged, our engineers can recover the data and rebuild a clean, openable file. We do this work in-house in North America with a no-data, no-charge guarantee, so there is no cost when a file cannot be recovered. See QuickBooks data recovery or start a recovery.
