Quickbooks File Repair — Error code: C=32, -35
Error C=32, -35 (and the related error -35) means the company file was used in a newer version of QuickBooks and cannot be opened in an older one. It is a version-mismatch condition, not always a sign of corruption, though it can leave a file effectively stranded.
What C=32, -35 means
Each new version of QuickBooks — and some releases — uses an updated internal data structure. Once a company file is converted (upgraded) into a newer version's format, the older version can no longer read it. QuickBooks files have not been usable across versions after conversion since version 4.0, so an older copy of the program will refuse the upgraded .QBW.
Symptoms you'll typically see
- An older QuickBooks reports the file was created in a newer version and stops.
- The
-35error accompanies the message about an incompatible version. - The file opens fine in the newer version but not on a machine running the older one.
Common causes
- The file was opened and converted on a workstation with a newer QuickBooks year/release.
- Different machines on the same network run mismatched QuickBooks versions.
- An attempt to open an upgraded file on a system that was never updated.
What you can safely try first
- Open the file on the machine that runs the same (or newer) QuickBooks version that last converted it.
- Standardize every workstation on one QuickBooks version and release.
- If you need the older version, restore a pre-conversion backup made before the upgrade.
When professional recovery is the safer path
Sometimes a file that throws -35 is not just version-mismatched but also damaged during a failed conversion, leaving no clean newer copy to open. If you have no working version that will load the file, our engineers can recover the data from the affected .QBW and its .TLG log. We work in-house in North America, and with our no-data-no-charge policy you pay nothing unless your data is recovered.
