Quickbooks File Repair — Error code: C= -6000,-816
Error C= -6000, -816 means QuickBooks was unable to open the company file because the file is reported as already in use. It surfaces most often in multi-user setups when the hosting configuration, patch level, or security software gets in the way of opening the shared .QBW file.
What -6000, -816 means
The -6000 family of errors signals that QuickBooks could not establish a clean connection to the company file. The -816 variant specifically points to the file being held open or hosted incorrectly, so the workstation trying to load it is refused access.
Symptoms you'll typically see
- QuickBooks reports the file is "in use" and will not open it.
- The error appears on one workstation while others may open the file normally.
- Trouble started after installing or updating antivirus or endpoint security.
Common causes
- The company file is not opened and hosted in multi-user mode where it should be.
- Computers and the server are not all on the same patch level (for example, the R9 patch).
- Recently installed antivirus, such as Symantec SEP, blocking the file connection.
What you can safely try first
- Confirm the company file is opened and hosted in multi-user mode on the server.
- Bring every computer and server to the same QuickBooks release/patch level (e.g. R9).
- Temporarily disable or add exclusions in the antivirus/SEP on the affected machine to test access.
- Restart the QuickBooks Database Server service so any stale lock on the
.NDfile clears.
When professional recovery is the safer path
If the file refuses to open after the hosting, patch, and security steps are corrected, the .QBW itself may be damaged rather than merely locked. Our engineers can diagnose whether the obstacle is configuration or corruption, and repair the file when needed. We work in-house in North America, and with our no-data-no-charge policy you pay nothing unless your data is recovered.
