Quickbooks File Repair — Error -6177, 0
Error -6177, 0 means QuickBooks is attempting to open your company file but cannot establish the path to it on the host computer. The full message reads: "QuickBooks is attempting to open this Company file. Before you can open the company file from your computer you must first open the company file on the computer where the company file is located. (-6177,0)."
What -6177, 0 means
This is a hosting and file-path error. QuickBooks needs the computer that physically stores the .QBW file to be hosting it correctly before workstations can connect. When the path mapping breaks or hosting is misconfigured, the connecting machine sees -6177, 0 even though the file is intact.
Common causes
- Hosting configured incorrectly between the server and the workstations.
- A stale or damaged network path or mapped drive to the data folder.
- A version-specific bug -- this issue was resolved in a later release of QuickBooks 2009.
What you can safely try first
If you are on QuickBooks 2009, update to the latest release, which Intuit fixed for this error. Beyond that:
- Reboot the server and the workstations before deeper troubleshooting -- this alone sometimes clears -6177, 0.
- Confirm that only the host machine has Host Multi-User Access turned on.
- Use the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the host to re-scan the folder containing the data file.
- Verify the workstations reach the host by its name or IP and that the share is accessible.
Symptoms you'll typically see
- Workstations fail to open a file that opens fine on the host.
- The error returns after a server reboot or a network change.
- Multi-user mode will not engage.
When professional recovery is the safer path
