Quickbooks File Repair — Error -6000, -83
Error -6000, -83 means QuickBooks could not open your company file, most often because of insufficient folder permissions or a network-hosting problem. The message frequently reads "You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder." To use QuickBooks in multi-user mode, the account needs read/write access plus create and delete rights to the folder where the .QBW file is stored.
What -6000, -83 means
The -6000 family covers a range of company-file access failures, and the -83 suffix points at permissions and hosting. QuickBooks needs to create and update companion files -- the .ND network descriptor and the .TLG transaction log -- in the same folder as the data file. If Windows or the network share blocks those operations, the file won't open.
Common causes
- The Windows account lacks full read/write/create/delete rights to the data folder.
- Hosting is configured incorrectly across the server and workstations.
- A damaged
.NDfile or a firewall blocking QuickBooks ports. - The company file itself is damaged.
What you can safely try first
Intuit recommends downloading the Network Diagnostic Tool (part of the QuickBooks Tool Hub), which analyzes the connection and flags permission and hosting problems automatically. Then:
- Confirm the folder grants full control to the user and that hosting is enabled on the server only.
- Rename the
.NDfile and let QuickBooks regenerate it. - Copy the
.QBWfile to the local drive and try opening it there to rule out the network. - Configure firewall exceptions for QuickBooks.
When professional recovery is the safer path
If the file opens cleanly from a local drive but still fails on the server with -6000, -83, the problem is environmental. But if it refuses to open everywhere, or opens with errors, the data file is likely damaged. Our engineers repair corrupted .QBW files and return a verified copy you can open with confidence. We work in-house across North America, and our no-data, no-charge policy means you owe nothing if we can't recover your data.
