Error -6000, -83 means QuickBooks could not open your company file, most often because of insufficient folder permissions or a network-hosting problem. The message frequently reads "You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder." To use QuickBooks in multi-user mode, the account needs read/write access plus create and delete rights to the folder where the .QBW file is stored.

What -6000, -83 means

The -6000 family covers a range of company-file access failures, and the -83 suffix points at permissions and hosting. QuickBooks needs to create and update companion files -- the .ND network descriptor and the .TLG transaction log -- in the same folder as the data file. If Windows or the network share blocks those operations, the file won't open.

Common causes

• The Windows account lacks full read/write/create/delete rights to the data folder.
• Hosting is configured incorrectly across the server and workstations.
• A damaged .ND file or a firewall blocking QuickBooks ports.
• The company file itself is damaged.

• Confirm the folder grants full control to the user and that hosting is enabled on the server only.
• Rename the .ND file and let QuickBooks regenerate it.
• Copy the .QBW file to the local drive and try opening it there to rule out the network.
• Configure firewall exceptions for QuickBooks.
