Quickbooks File Repair — Error (-6177,-0), (-6178,-0), -6108, -105 or (-6179,-0)

QuickBooks errors -6177, -6178, -6108, -105, and -6179 are the family of 6000-series messages that fire when QuickBooks cannot get to or read the company file it has been pointed at. The original diagnosis is encouraging: this is a recoverable error.

What these 6000-series errors mean

The 6000-range codes generally describe a problem reaching the .QBW file rather than a fault inside QuickBooks itself. The program either cannot locate the file on the path it expects, cannot get the database engine to serve it, or reads the file and finds the internal structure damaged. Because the financial data normally still exists, these errors usually point to a fixable access or structure problem.

Symptoms you'll typically see

  • One of the -6177, -6178, -6108, -105, or -6179 codes when opening the file.
  • The file opens on the host computer but fails from networked workstations.
  • The error followed a move of the file to a new folder, drive, or server.
  • Multi-user mode fails while single-user briefly succeeds, or vice versa.

Common causes

  • A damaged or stale .ND network descriptor, or the Database Server Manager not running on the host.
  • Hosting enabled on more than one computer, confusing which machine serves the file.
  • Folder permissions that block QuickBooks from reaching the file's location.
  • Genuine internal damage to the .QBW that the engine cannot read past.

What you can safely try first

Make a copy of the file and work on the copy. Move that copy to a local drive on the host and try opening it directly, which separates an access problem from a damage problem. Renaming the matching .ND file lets QuickBooks rebuild the network descriptor fresh, clearing many of these codes. Confirm hosting is enabled only on the host and that the Database Server Manager is running there. If the file still fails to open locally after these steps, the issue is likely inside the file itself — stop forcing it open.

When professional recovery is the safer path

When the .QBW opens nowhere and the access checks come back clean, the structure inside the file needs direct repair that the in-app tools cannot perform. Our engineers repair the damaged file and return a working copy, all in-house in North America and never sent overseas, backed by our no-data, no-charge guarantee.
