Quickbooks File Repair — Connection lost to external drive

"Connection lost to external drive" is the error you hit when QuickBooks loses access to a company file that lives on a USB or network-attached external disk. The plain cause is that QuickBooks and the QuickBooks Database Server Manager are designed to run against a file on a drive where the program itself is installed -- not from an external drive that can drop its connection.

What this error means

QuickBooks keeps a live, exclusive hold on the working .QBW file and its companion .TLG and .ND files while the company is open. An external drive that sleeps, re-enumerates, or briefly disconnects breaks that hold mid-write. QuickBooks reports the lost connection, and the file can be left in an inconsistent state.

Symptoms you'll typically see

  • Messages such as "Can't connect to an external drive" or "Could not connect to my external drive."
  • QuickBooks freezing or dropping the company file when the drive spins down or is unplugged.
  • The file refusing to reopen, or opening with damage, after a connection drop.

What you can safely try first

  • Move the company file onto an internal drive of the computer where QuickBooks (or the Database Server Manager) is installed. This is the supported location, and it removes the root cause.
  • If the file must stay shared, host it from a server with the file on its local internal disk, not on an external drive hung off that server.
  • Make a fresh backup before moving anything, and never unplug the external drive while QuickBooks is open.

When professional recovery is the safer path

A workaround to keep the file on an external drive does exist, but it is complicated and inconsistent, and a drop during a write can leave the .QBW damaged. If your file was open when the external drive disconnected and it now won't open or shows errors, the write was likely cut off mid-transaction. Our engineers recover the data straight from the file and rebuild the damaged structure so you don't lose work.
