Quickbooks File Repair — C=304

QuickBooks error C=304 means the program could not create its image file (.qbi) — usually because of a lack of disk space or a network limitation. QuickBooks creates the .qbi file when a company file is opened and deletes it when the file is closed, so a failure to create it stops the file from opening cleanly.

What C=304 means

The .qbi file is a working image QuickBooks builds alongside your open .QBW company file. It needs room to write that file and adequate access to the location where the company file lives. C=304 is raised when QuickBooks cannot create the .qbi — most often the drive or share is out of space, or network conditions prevent the write. This is typically an environment problem rather than corruption inside the accounting data.

Symptoms you'll typically see

  • C=304 when opening a company file.
  • The error appearing only on a drive or share that is low on free space.
  • Files opening locally but failing from a particular network location.
  • An orphaned .qbi file left behind after a previous improper shutdown.

Common causes

  • Insufficient free disk space on the drive holding the company file.
  • Network limitations or permissions preventing creation of the .qbi file.
  • A leftover .qbi file from a prior crash blocking a fresh one.
  • Read-only or restricted permissions on the company-file folder.

What you can safely try first

  • Free up disk space on the drive or share that stores the .QBW file.
  • Copy the company file to a local drive with ample space and try opening it there.
  • Remove any stale .qbi file left in the company-file folder, then reopen.
  • Confirm the user has full read/write permission to the folder.

When professional recovery is the safer path

Once space and permissions are restored, C=304 usually clears, because the .qbi is a temporary working file. If, however, a previous crash that triggered C=304 also left the underlying .QBW damaged — so the file still fails after freeing space — our engineers can examine the company file directly and recover it intact.
