Quickbooks File Repair — "LVL_ERROR"
LVL_ERROR is QuickBooks' way of reporting an internal level error -- a low-level fault the program logs when it hits data it cannot read or interpret correctly. The classic form points at a memorized report: a log line such as el_cmrpt.c (1218) reporting that "Memorized Report recnum 45 could not find formatting data" and that the report "must be deleted," followed by a prompt to restart QuickBooks and note the C= value for support.
What LVL_ERROR means
An LVL_ERROR is raised when QuickBooks reaches a record it expects to be well-formed but finds incomplete or corrupted. In the memorized-report case, a saved report points to formatting data that no longer exists or has been damaged. The same error class can surface elsewhere in the file when an internal record reference is broken.
Symptoms you'll typically see
- A pop-up reading "An error has occurred in QuickBooks. Please restart QuickBooks and try again," often with a
C=value. - A specific message naming a memorized report by record number that "could not find formatting data."
- The error repeating each time you open the report list, a particular report, or the company file.
What you can safely try first
- Restart QuickBooks fully, close every open window, and reopen only the company file.
- If the message names a specific memorized report, delete that report from the Memorized Report List -- it is usually the single damaged record.
- Run Verify Data, then Rebuild Data (File > Utilities) to let QuickBooks repair what it can.
- Note the exact
C=value shown; it tells our engineers which internal subsystem flagged the fault.
When professional recovery is the safer path
If the error returns after deleting the named report, or if Rebuild reports unresolved problems, the damage likely extends beyond a single record. Repeated Rebuilds on a corrupted file can compound the loss. Our team extracts your lists, transactions, and reports directly from the underlying file structure rather than relying on QuickBooks' own repair, so good data is preserved and the broken record is rebuilt cleanly.
Our engineers handle QuickBooks data recovery in-house across North America, with no outsourcing of your file. There is no charge if we cannot recover your data. When you're ready, start a recovery and we'll take it from there.
