Order E-Tech's Data Recovery Service for Quickbooks

"An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file" means QuickBooks reached your company file but could not read or open it properly -- and it usually points to a damaged file, a broken network path, or a permissions block. Our engineers see this error regularly and can recover the underlying .QBW file when the cause is data damage.

What the error means

This message appears when QuickBooks attempts to access your company file and the read fails. Sometimes the program cannot reach the file at all; other times it reaches the file but finds the data, the index, or the supporting files in a state it cannot use. The message itself is generic, so the real cause has to be narrowed down before any fix.

Common causes

  • Damage inside the .QBW company file itself
  • A missing, corrupt, or stale .ND network descriptor or a wedged .TLG log
  • The file was moved, renamed, or its network path or mapped drive changed
  • Windows or folder permissions blocking QuickBooks from reading the file
  • An interrupted upgrade, crash, or power loss that left the file half-written

Safe steps to try first

Before assuming the worst, a few safe checks resolve the simpler cases:

  • Make a copy of the company file and work only on the copy -- never experiment on the original
  • Confirm the file is in its expected location and that the path or mapped drive has not changed
  • Delete the .ND file and let QuickBooks rebuild it, then reopen the file locally
  • Open the file directly on the computer where it is stored, rather than across the network, to rule out path issues
  • Check that your Windows user account has read and write access to the folder

When recovery is needed

If the file still will not open after the safe checks, the company file itself is most likely damaged, and forcing QuickBooks to keep opening it can make the damage worse. At that point stop and preserve what you have. Our engineers can take the .QBW and .TLG files, plus any older .QBB or .QBW backup, diagnose the damage, repair the file in-house, and return a working company file. In most cases we recover everything without data loss.
